Graffiti, as defined in the dictionary, means a rude decoration inscribed on rocks or walls. That's not our experience, growing up in NYC.
The streets were brought to life through brightly colored images, that demonstrated emotions, symbols, and writtings (tag-ups) of all kinds. Sign of life, death and hope were protrayed with words and pictures spray painted on subways, building walls, garage doors, alley ways; some were even on the sidewalks. This is a street culture created by artists who used there surroundings as their canvas. This allowed them to express themselves to everyone in the world, or at least their world; the people around the block. The creativity that has originated from street culture, still holds its space in areas of our cities. Many, we no longer have up to see, due to demolition, wear over time, and even for beautification projects.
Urban Walls is graffiti at its best, compiled from hundreds of artists in the Tri-State Area. Over the past decade, WET INK has personally chosen talented artists to represent our vision for the future of Urban Walls. WET INK continues the artistic journey to preserve a fading art form, and present it to you through virtual pages.
We hope other artists are as inspired by the graffiti pieces, as we were when we first saw their explosion of creativity brought to life, from black books to city walls.
